Introduction
You’ve done it — you’ve exceeded your predicted grades and achieved something truly impressive. That envelope in your hand represents years of hard work, determination, and resilience, and now the possibilities are wider than ever. If you thought Clearing was just for last-minute university placements, think again. For high-achieving students, it can be the golden key to unlocking a Russell Group university place, even if you didn’t initially apply to one. This is your chance to aim higher and set yourself on a path to an exceptional academic and professional future.
1. Why Aim for a Russell Group University?
The Russell Group represents 24 of the UK’s most prestigious universities, known for their world-class teaching, research excellence, and outstanding graduate employability. These institutions are often ranked among the top globally and offer unparalleled networking opportunities, internships, and research facilities. Attending a Russell Group university can significantly enhance your career prospects and earning potential after graduation. Employers around the world recognise and value these institutions for their academic rigour and innovation. If your grades now meet or exceed their requirements, you could secure a place this September and elevate your university experience to the highest level.
2. Which Russell Group Universities Use Clearing?
While spaces are limited, universities such as Queen Mary, Cardiff, Nottingham, and even some courses at Bristol and Edinburgh often appear in Clearing lists. These opportunities aren’t always widely advertised, and some places can be available only for a few hours before they’re filled. Courses in high-demand fields like law, medicine, and engineering may still have competitive entry requirements, but there’s often greater flexibility for students with top results. Even within Russell Group universities, some subject areas may be more open to high achievers applying through Clearing. Knowing exactly which universities and courses to target gives you a massive advantage on Results Day.
Clearing Your Way to the Top
Use your outstanding grades to secure a place at a Russell Group institution.
High grades open doors — Clearing helps you walk straight into a world-class university experience.
3. Making the Perfect Clearing Application
Have your UCAS number, A-Level grades, and a polished personal statement ready before you start making calls. If you can, update your statement to reflect your stronger-than-expected grades and any additional achievements. High-achieving students should emphasise academic strengths, extracurricular activities, and career ambitions that align closely with the university’s reputation and focus areas. Don’t underestimate the power of enthusiasm — admissions teams want to hear why you’re passionate about their institution and course. Preparing talking points in advance can help you feel confident and professional when speaking to admissions officers.
4. The Advantage of Acting Immediately
Russell Group Clearing places are snapped up fast — sometimes within hours of being released. Acting on Results Day, or even the same morning, could be the difference between receiving an offer and missing your chance entirely. Keep your phone fully charged, internet connection stable, and all documents on hand. If possible, have a family member or friend ready to help with research while you make calls. This is one of those moments where speed, preparation, and persistence can completely change your academic future.
5. How We Help You Land Your Place
